Make it your way

Mix
A whisk gives the smoothest cup. A frother, shaker bottle or spoon works too.
Milk
Dairy for creamy and classic, oat for naturally sweet and vegan.
Serve
Hot, cold from the fridge, or poured over ice.
Sweetness
½ tsp lightly sweet, 1 tsp balanced, 2 tsp sweet.

Four Ways to Mix

Electric Whisk or Frother

Quickest, smoothest foam

Add the matcha and water to your cup. Hold an electric whisk or milk frother near the bottom and run it for about 10 seconds, slowly lifting it toward the surface. Then add your milk and sweeten to taste. For a café-style latte, froth the milk too.

Chasen

The traditional bamboo whisk

Add the matcha and water to a bowl or wide mug. Whisk briskly back and forth in a zigzag rather than in circles for about 15 seconds, until it’s smooth with a light foam on top. Then pour in your milk and sweeten to taste.

Shake

Best for iced

Add the matcha, water, milk, your sweetener and a few ice cubes to a shaker bottle or jar. Seal it tightly and shake hard for 10 to 15 seconds, then pour it straight into a glass.

Stir

No tools needed

Start with just a splash of the water and stir it into a smooth paste, pressing any clumps against the side of the cup with the back of the spoon. Then stir in the rest of the water, your milk and your sweetener.

Make it by feel

The measurements are a great place to start. Once you have a feel for it, try eyeballing it instead. It’s quicker, and every cup comes out exactly the way you like it.

Tips

Why water first?

Matcha is a fine powder that suspends rather than dissolves. Mixing it with a little water first breaks up clumps, so the milk blends in smooth.

Hot, not boiling

Water around 175°F mixes matcha quickly and brings out its smooth, naturally sweet flavor. Boiling water scalds the delicate tea and draws out bitterness. No thermometer? Let freshly boiled water rest for a couple of minutes.

Using the 50g pouch?

1 tsp (2g) is the same as one stick. A whisk or frother gives the smoothest cup.

Storage

Each stick is sealed, so it stays fresh until you open it. Keep your pack somewhere cool and dry, away from direct sunlight.
